Be straightforward that these are mysteries. The mysteries of nature are difficult enough – witness scientific research – so how much more incomprehensible to us are the mysteries of God? This is the approach that God himself took in response to Job’s questioning (chapters 38 – 41). A little more can be said about the Trinity since Job’s time, however. The Creator, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit are all divine in the same sense according to the New Testament (e.g. John 1:1, Ephesians 4:30), yet there is one God; that ‘same sense’ is the oneness. The Old Testament speaks of one God, with some hints that there is more to Him. The New Testament zooms in on Him so that we see the Three clearly.
